Tread Depth is Falling Short
The tread on your tires is not just for show, it provides the necessary grip to keep your vehicle stable on the road. The U.S. Department of Transportation recommends replacing tires when they reach 2/32 of an inch in tread depth. An easy way to measure this is with the penny test. Simply insert a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tread depth is less than 2/32 inch and it’s time to replace your tires.
Tires are Showing their Age
Tires have a lifespan, and even if they look like they have not been worn down, they can still be unsafe. Most manufacturers recommend tire replacement at six years from the date of manufacture, regardless of tread life, with ten years being the absolute limit. You can find the tire’s manufacture date on the sidewall, represented by a four-digit code with the week and year of manufacture.
Tire Sidewall Integrity Compromised
Check your tire sidewalls for cracks, cuts, or grooves. These can indicate that your tire is developing a leak, or worse, that it is at risk of a blowout. Visible sidewall damage is a surefire sign that new tires are in the immediate future.
Tire Bulges & Blisters
Over time, the outer surface of the tire may weaken, leading to a bulge or blister that protrudes from the rest of the tire’s surface. This weak spot can cause a sudden blowout, and therefore, such tires should be replaced immediately.
Excessive Vibration
While some vibration is normal, especially on poorly paved roads, excessive vibration may suggest that your tires are misaligned or unbalanced. It can also indicate internal tire damage. If balancing your tires does not resolve the vibration, it might be time for a new set.
You Are Just Not Sticking to the Road
If you notice that your car is slipping in wet conditions, or it is just not handling or braking as it should, your tires might not be providing enough traction. This can be particularly dangerous in weather conditions when grip is essential.
Tread Wear Indicator Bars
Newer tires have a convenient feature known as tread wear indicator bars. These bars are barely visible when tires are new, but gradually begin to appear as the tread wears down. If you notice these bars starting to form a bridge between your treads, it is time for a tire change.
